NOTENOTE A * A means both pilots respond.
NOTEWhen carrying NON - PILOT passengers complete a briefing which covers: 1. The location and use of emergency exits, emergency locator Transmitter and fire extinguisher. 2. No smoking. 3. Use of seat belts. 4. Operation of main door, intercom, lights if applicable. 5. Actions to take in the event of an emergency. 6. Other items for use in an emergency.
NOTEWhen carrying Non - Selair pilots complete a briefing which covers: 1. The location and operation of all exits. 2. No smoking. 3. Use of seat belts. 4. Location of ELT. 5. Operation of intercom. 6. Any operational duties expected of the A guest pilot A.
NOTERadio circuit breakers are directly below the Avionics stack. Most system circuit breakers are on the left sub-panel. In GSAK there are some circuit breakers below the left sub-panel on a second sub-panel.
NOTEAll electric switches on the left sub-panel should be off. The panel light rheostats on the centre console should be off. The over head switch for dome light should be off for day flights.
PRE-START COMPLETE
COLD ENGINE START engine_start
NOTESet the throttle approximately a quarter to half an inch from the idle stop, slightly more in very cold weather. ( Higher throttle settings will cause more , or quicker, priming. )
NOTETurn each Boost pump on individually. Listen to confirm that the pump is working. Observe the Fuel Flow gauge. Usually the fuel will flow after about 1 to 3 seconds. ( depending on exact throttle setting ). Once the fuel begins to flow, prime for about 3 seconds if OAT is above 20C. More for cold weather, to a maximum of about 10 seconds at - 40C. Flight with OAT less than -40C is not authorized.
NOTECall CLEAR out the left window, loud enough to be heard, just prior to cranking the engine. -Keep left hand on starter and right hand on throttle. -Activate starter and crank the engine for a maximum of 30 seconds. -As soon as the engine starts release the starter and adjust the throttle to idle between 800-1000 rpm. -Check that oil pressure is rising within 30 seconds. -Allow the oil pressure to stabilize. Warm up as required if oil pressure is high due to cold outside temperatures. -Increase the rpm to 1300. Oil pressure can sometimes remain high for several minutes in cold weather. EGTs some- times do not indicate at idle power. CHT will normally rise to more than 200 degrees Fahrenheit within 1 minute of start up.
NOTE-If there is a pilot in the right seat, he should check and call CLEAR RIGHT. -The starting procedure is the same as for the left engine.
NOTELoad split means that the total load is now divided between the two alternators , but may or may not be equal.
COLD START COMPLETE
HOT OR FLOODED START engine_start
NOTETurn each Boost pump on individually. Listen to confirm that the pump is working. Observe the Fuel Flow gauge. Stop priming as soon as the fuel flow begins to indicate.
NOTESet throttles approximately one half to three quarters of an inch from the idle stop.
NOTECall A CLEAR A out the left window, loud enough to be heard, just prior to cranking the engine. -Keep left hand on starter and RIGHT HAND ON MIXTURE. -Activate starter and crank the engine for a maximum of 30 seconds. -As soon as the engine starts release the starter and move the mixture to full rich. -Immediately set the throttle to idle at 1000 rpm. -Check that oil pressure is rising within 30 seconds. -Allow the oil pressure to stabilize. -Increase the rpm to 1300.
NOTEIf there is a pilot in the right seat, they should check and call ACLEAR RIGHT A. The starting procedure is the same as for the left engine.
NOTELoad split means that the total load is now divided between the two alternators, but may or may not be equal.
HOT START COMPLETE
POST START after_start
NOTE- After the PN - 101 is turned on, select the switch directly below the HSI to SLAVED unless DG mode is required.
NOTE- For night operations turn on Navigation lights and cockpit/ panel lights. - The beacon should always be on with the engines running.
NOTECheck: Roughly set the clock. ASI on zero Attitude Indicator set to eye level. Altimeter works normally and set to field elevation. Manifold pressure normal. RPMs set. Fuel flows normal. Ammeters normal Engine gauges normal. Turn Coordinator normal. HSI no flags Check heading against compass. VSI reads normally, note errors. RMI slaved to match HSI. Right side Altimeter and HI check and set.
NOTEGet ATIS first - Marker beacons push to test and set audio to OFF. - All other audio panel switches set as required. - Intercom set as required. - Communications radio volumes set as required. On MF Ground or ATF. - VORs check ( VOT preferred or other tests if unavailable. ) - ILS/LOC test. - ADF test - DME test ( may be done with VOR or ILS test if more convenient. ) - Transponder test.
TAXI taxi
NOTEWhen the aircraft first starts to move, gently and evenly apply the brakes to slow the aircraft. Once the pilot=s side is checked, use normal change of control procedures and have the PNF check the brakes on the other side. Finally, return control to the original pilot, and continue.
NOTEPerform above checks from memory while taxiing. Once parked in run-up area read the checklist and confirm that all the items have been done.
POST START COMPLETE
RUN-UP before_takeoff
NOTE- Reduce the engine rpms together and not more then 200 rpm. - For the first flight of the day exercise the propellers three times - For subsequent flights exercise the propellers once.
NOTE- Select each magneto individually starting with the left engine. - Between each selection return the switch to the both position. - The maximum allowable drop is 125 rpm. - The maximum difference between mags is 75 rpm.
NOTE- Reduce the fuel flow, on the gauge, by one to two gph. - Check the EGT: It should start to rise within a few seconds. - If no rise in EGT suspect an unserviceable gauge, and reduce the fuel flow on that engine further until a slight loss of power is detected. This confirms the mixture is working.
NOTE- Turn off one alternator. Check that the other alternator picks up the entire load. Then turn the alternator back on and turn the other one off. Again check that the single alternator carries the entire load. - When both alternators are on the load will not be equally split , but this is normal.
NOTE- Pull out the alternate airs and check that there is minor manifold pressure change. - Check that the rpms drop very slightly. If the rpms do not change at all suspect Unserviceable alternate air controls.
NOTE- Perform the feather check ONE ENGINE AT A TIME. - Pull the propeller control back past the feather detent. - Listen for the rpm drop and observe the tachometer. - As soon as the rpms begin to drop the check is complete. - Immediately move the propeller lever back to Full Fine. - The rpms should NOT be allowed to drop below 1000 rpm.
NOTE- Move the throttles slowly back all the way to the idle stop. - DURING the reduction of power check that the oil pressure and suction both drop. - The oil pressure should stabilize in the yellow or higher. - The idle rpm should be between 500 and 700 rpm. - Once the above items are complete return the engine to 1300 rpm.
RUN UP COMPLETE
PRE-TAKEOFF before_takeoff
NOTE- Adjust the elevator trim to six ( 6 ) up. - Set the aileron and rudder trim to centre and zero respectively.
NOTE- select the alternate static source on. Do NOT expect any change in the static instruments. If there is any change in reading of the static instruments suspect blockage of the primary static source and have it checked before flight.
NOTE- All heading indicators must be checked against the magnetic compass even though they are remotely slaved.
NOTE- At this point in the check list call DOWN TO THE LINE . - Any takeoff clearance required should be received at this time. - Lookout for traffic should be completed. - The remaining items are then completed while taxiing to position. - Request a short delay on the runway if extra time will be needed for the remaining items.
NOTE- If the Pulse light is functioning then the landing light will be used only for night flight
NOTE- The Pitot Heat will be on for any IFR flight even in VMC conditions.
NOTE- The heading indicators should line up within 5 degrees of the known runway heading. - If they do not then a malfunction or other error should be assumed and checked out, as per SOPs.
PRE-TAKEOFF COMLETE
POST TAKEOFF after_takeoff
NOTE- Climb power will not be set until at least 500' agl. - Climb power will be 25" x 2500 rpm.
NOTE- Do not select Aux. Tanks until the aircraft is flying straight and at a speed of 105 knots or greater . If doing an extended climb at Vy or flying circuits remain on Mains. - Allow 30 seconds between each selector change.
NOTE- Do not turn the Boost pumps off until well above 500 > agl. If remaining in the circuit the pumps stay on. Allow 15 seconds between each pump when selecting them off.
NOTEOptimum operating temperature is approximately 2/3 of green arc on the CHT ( 350 degrees Fahrenheit. ) - If the CHT is significantly below 350 degrees close the cowl flaps. - If the CHT is near or above 350 degrees leave the cowl flaps open.
POST TAKEOFF COMPLETE
PRE-LANDING before_landing
NOTEWhen turning the Boost Pumps on, no delay is required between pumps. I.E. they can be turned on together.
NOTE- Use the landing light for night landings, unless the pulse light is unserviceable.
NOTEConfirm the gear is down by checking all the following: - The green light. - The mirror on the cowling , and - The mechanical indicator between the rudder pedals.
FINAL LANDING landing
NOTECheck the green light and mirror. The mechanical indicator is too awkward on short final.
PRE-LANDING COMPLETE
POST LANDING after_landing
NOTETurn off : - Pilot heat. - Pulse light. - Any other electrics not required for the conditions.
POST LANDING COMPLETE
SHUT DOWN shutdown
NOTE- All electrics on left sub-panel off. - Panel light rheostats on centre console off.
NOTE- One engine at a time , turn MAG switch slowly to LEFT then RIGHT then OFF and quickly back to BOTH before the engine stops. Check the mags are live on the LEFT and RIGHT position and dead on the OFF position.
