Preflight and Cockpit preflight_inspection

Canopy
NOTEDo not use the overhead toggle to close the canopy; that releases the canopy securing pins and allows the whole canopy to fall off the rear of the fuselage.
Use the little knob at the forward corner to close the canopy
Make sure the canopy is fully home before takeoff
NOTEThe canopies are allowed to be opened in flight.

Engine Start engine_start

Radial engine priming and start
NOTEEngine is turned over pneumatically.
NOTEPull-through to clear the bottom cylinders of oil still has to be done if the aeroplane has been left standing for a few hours.
Charge the internal priming cylinder with fuel using the lever on the lower right of the cockpit
Press the firing button on the left of the instrument panel

Taxi and Power Checks taxi

NOTETaxying the Yak C11 is straightforward; the aeroplane feels heavy on the ground. Toe brakes on this example make steering easier.
Make sure cowl flaps are open
WARNINGDo not take off with cowl flaps closed. There are two types of Yak pilots — the ones who have taken off with the cowl flaps closed, and the ones who haven't yet but will.

Takeoff takeoff

Line up and allow the aircraft to run forward a few feet to make sure the automatic tailwheel lock engages with aft stick before applying full power
Check Ts and Ps before rotation
Rotate at 90 knots90 KT
Once airborne, raise the gear
Bring power back to 75% with the throttle and rpm lever
Climb at 135 knots135 KT
At max weight and max power, VSI will show 1,600 fpm1600 FPM

Cruise Performance cruise

At full throttle at 1,000 feet, speed is 225 knots TAS and fuel burn is 50 gallons per hour225 KT / 50 GPH
At 75% power, speed is 200 knots and fuel burn is 33 gallons per hour200 KT / 33 GPH
At 140 knots, fuel burn is 16 gallons per hour140 KT / 16 GPH

Descent and Slowing Down descent

NOTEThe Yak C11 is typically difficult to slow down and takes a while to get the airspeed low enough to meet the gear and flap limits, even with the throttle fully closed.
Gear limit is 163 knots163 KT
Flap limit is 135 knots135 KT

Approach and Landing approach

NOTEThe best approach is a curved one; visibility over the nose is poor, and non-existent from the rear seat.
Make a positive landing flare
After touchdown, bring the stick back before applying large brake pressure to prevent a noseover

Stall and Spin Stall and Spin

NOTEThe aeroplane exhibits a pronounced starboard wing drop in all configurations and power settings; severity depends on applied power. There is little warning buffet.
NOTEThe aeroplane can flick into a steep, mind-numbing spin. Spin recovery is predictable and it comes out cleanly within 90 degrees of rotation.
