SEATS & BELTSLOCKED & SECURE *
NOTEMake sure the seat is positioned to allow for proper rudder movement. Ensure seat locking pins are engaged and confirm this by making a twisting motion.
NOTELap belt and shoulder harness can be loose enough to reach all required items in the cockpit at this point and will be tightened further on the Pre-Takeoff check.
CONTROLSFREE & CORRECT
NOTEPerform the Abox check@ starting with a left turn
PARKING BRAKESET
NOTEDepress the brake pedals and hold while setting park brake
CIRCUIT BREAKERSALL IN
NOTEAny CBs locked in the out position and labelled >unserviceable maintenance= are to be left out
ELECTRICSOFF
NOTETurn all the white electric switches on the left sub-panel off
NOTETurn off the rheostat for the panel and radio lights (rotate counter clockwise)
NOTETurn off the map light on the left door post. (Note: this maybe be left on for a night start)
NOTETurn off the dome/courtesy light on the overhead panel
AVIONICS SWITCHOFF
MASTERON
AVIONICSOFF
NOTEConfirm the radios are not on. Look at the radios to see that the LEDs are not lit up.
AVIONICS FANON
NOTEListen for the fan
BEACONON
LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTON
NOTEIf the low voltage light does not come on, turn on additional ELECTRICS. The light should be on within 10 seconds.
AMMETERCHECKED
NOTEThe ammeter should show a slight discharge. The reading may be fluctuating slightly in synchronization with the flashing of the beacon.
FUELQUANTITY CHECKED, ON LEFT
FLAPSUP
NOTENormal flap operations should have been checked on the walk around prior to the flight. If not then check that the flaps will stop at each intermediate setting during the retraction.

Engine Start engine_start

MIXTUREFULL RICH
PRIMERPRIMED & LOCKED
NOTEPrime zero to three strokes for normal operation in OAT greater than zero. Prime more than three strokes for cold starts in OAT less than zero, but have fire guard standing by. Do not prime more than six strokes.
THROTTLESET
NOTEIf starting without using any prime (engine warm), set the throttle to the idle stop (fully closed). If starting with prime, set the throttle to one quarter inch from the idle stop.
ENGINE (START)STARTED
NOTECall ACLEAR@ out the window loud enough to be heard just prior to cranking the engine. Crank the engine for no more than 30 seconds. Once the engine starts adjust the throttle to achieve 800 to 1000 RPM, depending on temperature of engine. Wait for the oil pressure to rise and stabilize - SHUT DOWN IF NO OIL PRESSURE WITHIN 30 SECONDS. Once the oil pressure has stabilized adjust the throttle to 1000 RPM. DURING COLD WEATHER, SET RPM 700-800 FOR ENGINE WARM-UP.
OIL PRESSURENORMAL
AMMETERCHECKED
NOTEIf the start required cranking for more than 5 to 10 seconds expect approximately half scale deflection of the ammeter. The ammeter should return to within one needle width of the centre within 2 minutes or less after start.
SUCTIONCHECKED

ELECTRICSON (AS REQUIRED)
ELTCHECKED
NOTESelect 121.5 and turn the volume DOWN to a minimum. Pull the volume/squelch knob out. Turn up the volume until reaching a comfortable listening level. Check for an ELT tone, then push in the squelch.
INSTRUMENT PANELPANEL CHECKED
NOTEScan the panel from left to right and top to bottom. Check and set all instruments:
Clock set (universal time)
ASI on zero
Attitude indicator set to eye level
Altimeter works normally and set to field elevation
RPM set
Ammeter normal
Engine gauges normal
Turn coordinator normal
Set Heading Indicator (remember to use the compass card)
VSI reads zero
Adjust cabin heat/defrost as required
RADIOSRADIOS CHECKED
NOTEGet ATIS first if available
Marker beacons push to test and set audio
All other audio panel switches set as required
Intercom set as required
Comm radios volumes set as required, set to Ground, MF or ATF
VORs checked (VOT preferred or other test if VOT unavailable)
ILS/LOC test
ADF test
DME test (maybe be done with VOR or ILS test if more convenient)
Transponder test

Taxi taxi

BRAKESCHECKED
INSTRUMENTSCHECKED
NOTEIf operating single-pilot, the taxi check list is NOT to be read while taxiing. Instead, the brakes and instruments will be checked while taxiing and then the check list will be read once the aircraft is parked in the run-up area.

PARKING BRAKESET
THROTTLE1000
FUEL SELECTORQUANTITY CHECKED, ON BOTH
ENGINE GUAGESNORMAL
NOTEIt is normal to have no oil temperature showing at this point. As long as the engine reacts smoothly to the throttle the run-up can be continued.
THROTTLE1700
ENGINE GAUGESNORMAL
SUCTIONNORMAL
MIXTURECHECKED
NOTESlowly pull out the mixture control (use the vernier when close to the required setting) until a slight loss of RPM is detected. This confirms that the mixture is working. Return the mixture to full rich.
CARB HEATCHECKED
NOTEPull out the Carb Heat knob and check for a small loss of RPM. Leave the Carb Heat on for at least 10 seconds and ensure that the RPM remains stable. Any rise in RPM is an indication that ice is present. Leave the Carb Heat on until the rise stops and then leave it on for at least a further 10 seconds. Return the Carb Heat to the cold position.
MAGNETOSCHECKED
NOTEMaximum drop 125 RPM. Maximum differential 50 RPM
THROTTLEIDLE CHECKED
NOTEPull Carb Heat hot. Slowly reduce the throttle all the way to idle. Check that the oil pressure drops smoothly while the RPM decreases. Check the idle is set between 500 and 700 RPM with the Carb Heat hot. Check ammeter/alternator operation - normally the alternator will still produce enough current to maintain positive ammeter reading at idle but it is acceptable if the ammeter becomes negative at this point and the low voltage light comes on, as long as the ammeter returns to positive and the light goes out when the RPM is returned to 1000.
THROTTLE1000, CARB HEAT COLD
NOTEReturn the rpm to 900, put the carb heat to the cold position and adjust the rpm if needed to 1000.

Pre-Takeoff before_takeoff

SEAT & BELTSLOCKED & SECURE *
NOTEShoulder harness should now be snugged so that no more than a 3 to 4 inch gap remains between the harness and chest. The lap belt should be snug.
CONTROLSFREE
TRIMS________SET
NOTESPD and SPY have Arudder trim@. On these aircraft the rudder trim should be adjusted to neutral for takeoff. The elevator trim should be adjusted to the takeoff mark on the scale, this will not necessarily be neutral as viewed out the rear window. Once set, the call will be A ONE SET@ or ATWO SET@ as the case may be.
FUEL SELECTORQUANTITY CHECKED, ON BOTH
FLAPSSET FOR TAKEOFF
NOTENormal takeoffs are with 0Ε flap, short or soft fields with 10Ε.
ALTERNATE STATICCHECKED & OFF
NOTESelect Alternate Static on, usually there is a slight jump in the VSI and Altimeter when Alternate Static is selected. However, the primary concern is to allow the instruments to stabilize and check that they read the same values on the alternate source as on the primary source.
